President's Message—June 2007

by Dawn Adams Miller

We Did It!

Congrats to the chapter as we welcome our 200th member. This is great news. In the last two years or so we’ve almost doubled the size of our chapter. And, we’ve been able to bring you some of the most outstanding programs on offer for a chapter of our size.

This is amazing folks, and the chapter owes it all to you. You have stepped up to be on the board, responded to our requests for help and welcomed our guest and made them feel at home with the chapter. How about we make a deal? You continue to make the chapter a great place to meet, learn about training and development and share your experiences with each other. The leadership will continue to provide the value you’ve come to expect with our meetings, programs and even more or better services. So—deal or no deal?

We Need It!

The other thing that has been on my mind recently is the value of research. Lately I’ve been mining my company’s intranet for information and content to design a course. The inside joke is that our intranet is bigger than the Internet. It’s not that much of a joke, really. Our intranet IS bigger than the Internet.

Anyway, in addition to our content research we also struggle with questions like “What are other companies like us doing in this area?” or “What are the industry standards for that?” You probably have these questions and many others because the answers are likely not available on your intranet. What’s a poor T&D professional to do?

National to the rescue. Between the research reports, benchmarking options, and now the new WPL Scorecard available at www.astd.org, we can access great data that helps us do our jobs, answers our important questions and generally helps us come across as knowledgeable and a great resource for your department. How can you beat that?

And don’t forget our chapter members: all 200 of them. We are a great resource for each other. I bet you were wondering how I was going to tie those two things together. Huh? So, let’s make use of the resources we have: a pumped up chapter and national resources.

Finally…

Have a great summer! Relax, recharge, and get ready for Chapter 2.0. Elections for Board positions will take place in September. We have some great opportunities for you to get further involved with the chapter. So, while you have a great time at the beach or in the mountains or even just at work think about what you might want to do to help the chapter continue to be successful.

Cordially,

Dawn Adams Miller
