Perspective on the Learning Organization
Thanks to Dick Handshaw and Heather Fausnaugh for their great presentation at the meeting this month.
Managing a Learning Organization is an important topic and one, among many, that continues to
evolve. Having been in a training position for several years I have seen things change
yet stay the same.
But some of the changes are positive. The focus on employee productivity vs. just training, the push
for more business relevant training and metrics to show impact, and the understanding that just throwing
training at a problem isn’t necessarily the answer are huge strides.
I know it seems to those of us in the trenches that these changes happen at a snails pace and
that some of these changes were obvious years ago but given my 20 years in the field, this is amazing
progress. Sure we’ve got a long way to go. I personally am looking for the
Matrix’s wetware approach where we just jack into the “system” and learn how to
fly a helicopter in 30 seconds.
But progress is being made and our learners are benefiting as we are too. I think it’s much
more fun to be involved in the field today with all the possibilities than when it was just “Build
me a class.”
But I digress. Managing the Leaning Organization is still an issue. And Dick and Heather handled
the areas and their individual responses beautifully. In looking at the feedback left on the
evaluation sheets most of you felt that way.
