How Are You Doing?
Speaker:
Rita Mehegan Smith

Topic

Compared to other companies, how effective and efficient is your workplace learning function? What are other companies doing?

Global, as well as local, best practice benchmarking results in workplace learning will be shared and discussed. Key trends will also discussed. You will leave with solid benchmarking data and an "audit" worksheet to guide you in furthering assessing highly effective and efficient work place learning functions. Understanding where you "rank" relative to best practice will support business case.

The objectives are:

  1. Benchmarking best practices in global work place learning
  2. Understanding key areas to benchmark
  3. Understanding key trends affecting workplace learning
  4. Local workplace learning, best practice sharing

Take away materials include an executive summary of benchmarking results and a Workplace Learning "audit" worksheet

50% of lecturette with use of polling devices, 30% small group discussion, 20% large group discussion

30 minutes

Open with a series of questions posed by the CEO/CFO of a company relative to effectiveness and efficiency of the meeting attendees' learning function. (create sense of urgency).

Ask an ASTD State of Industry and/or other researched benchmarked question. Have small groups discuss their table response. Best practices can be shared at this time, too. Using polling devices, small groups(tables) provide their response. Real time polling results will come on the screen.

Benchmarking 101
Speaker:
Bob Cestaro, Kristy Temple, Scott Neeley

Topic

Benchmarking is the process of determining

  • who is the very best
  • who sets the standard
  • what that standard is.

In business, you could argue that 40 years of unprecedented growth would make Starbucks the benchmark in food retail sales. As professional trainers responsible for Human Performance Improvement it should be important for our organizations to understand in the field of Corporate Education:

  • Who is the best?
  • Why are they the best?
  • How do we get there?

This program is designed to provide a practical step by step guide on:

  • What is benchmarking
  • Why do benchmarking
  • How to do benchmarking
  • What to do with benchmarking data
  • Best practices and pitfalls to benchmarking

Bob Cestaro (Ingersoll Rand University), Scott Neeley (Newell Rubbermaid Training Center) and Kristy Temple (Ingersoll Rand University) will share practical benchmarking templates, processes and data that they are currently using in their learning organization benchmarking efforts. There will opportunities for Q&A and sharing of best practices from our members in the audience.

Please take the opportunity to provide the speakers with your benchmarking questions prior to the session by emailing programming@astdcharlotte.org (with the subject line: Benchmarking Question) so we can include your topics of interest in the presentation.

Topic:
Just Who Do You Think I Am?
Dr. Keirsey's Take On Temperament Type
Speaker:
Les Bird, Instructional Designer, TIAA-CREF

Topic

There are many ways to describe yourself and those around you. Those descriptions can range from accurate to absurd, and from nurturing to disparaging. Typology, (or personology), used constructively, provides us with filters through which we can gain more accurate interpretations of who people really are, resulting in improvements to our day-to-day interpersonal relationships, our work environment, and ourselves. The most accurate and usable interpretation of temperament type comes to us through more than 50 years of research and application by Dr. David Keirsey.

This presentation, based on Dr. Keirsey’s work, is designed to help you:

  • Easily identify temperament types
  • Illuminate interpersonal dynamics
  • Facilitate better decisions in hiring and career alignment
  • Construct teams that provide better results
  • Reduce workplace conflict and stress
  • Create a more harmonious personal life

All attendees will be provided with the opportunity to use the Keirsey temperament sorter and to access a report on their own temperament type.

The Speaker

Les Bird

After having worked for the major banks in Charlotte, with an academic background in Education, Language Arts and Psychology, Les has been a technical writer and instructional designer for more than twelve years in the pulp and paper, financial, and software development industries.

In keeping with his temperament type, Les was so overwhelmed with the accuracy and value of Keirsey temperament theory that he became a Keirsey temperament certified professional in 2006.

Les was an ASTD board member of the Charlotte chapter during 2007.

Principles, Positions, and Ideas for E-Learning
Speakers:
Scot May, Capital Bank
Chris Prigmore, Handshaw Associates
Mike Perkins, Newell Rubbermaid

Topic

We have all rushed (or are in that process) to e-learning…but is it good e-learning? That can be a subjective judgment, depending on who you ask. In this session, we will review six (or however many) effective e-learning principles and how those principles are (or are not) being applied to e-learning solutions.

We will begin by examining the principles, positions, and ideas of several industry experts. We will then review samples of e-learning—good and bad—to see how the principles were (or were not) applied. Following the initial presentation, there will be a short discussion panel with e-learning practitioners fielding questions and challenging conventional wisdom in the production of e-learning.

This session will be interactive with audience participation (conversation, debate, and crying). Panel members include Chris Prigmore of Handshaw, Inc., Mike Perkins of Newell-Rubbermaid, and Scot May of Capital Bank.
