Working Effectively in Diverse Cultures
Speaker:
Juanita Coston

Topic

With a new team in the White House, recession reports and continual talk of doing more with less, Juanita Coston kicks off 2009 by challenging us on how to work effectively in diverse cultures. Join us as we consider the makeup of our chapter, our community and how we can leverage those to benefit our companies, clients and customers. Diversity is not just about gender and race it is about diversity of thought.

What you want to do is create an environment that is welcoming to top performers and where people know what it takes to succeed. Members will have an opportunity for interactive cultural conversations which will encourage 'team understanding'.

Juanita will address diversity by showing organizations how not to lose sight of their business goals.

What makes an effective diverse culture:

  • Addressing employee emotional needs
  • People want fair and equitable treatment
  • A safe environment
  • To be appreciated
  • An opportunity for meaningful face time
  • Someone to go to if they have problems
  • Challenging projects with attainable goals.

Creating an Engaging Work Culture:
Fundamental Principles for Business Success in Turbulent Times
Speaker:
Rich Schlentz

Topic

Why is the concept of engagement important?

  • Watson-Wyatt—companies with engaged employees outperform others by 47% to 202%
  • Hay Group—offices with engaged employees are 43% more productive
  • Gallop—engaged employees are 87% less likely to leave

Simply put, engagement is the ability to capture the souls, hearts, and minds of people to instill an intrinsic desire and passion for excellence.  It means creating a culture where employees are intellectually and emotionally tied to the company vision.  Engaged team members are loyal, committed, creative, and innovative.  They are also more productive than their disengaged counterparts and deliver high-level customer service while positivity impacting the bottom-line.  This fun, energetic and interactive workshop will focus on the fundamental principles that successful organizations apply in order to create and foster engaging cultures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the need for leaders who have the courage to create and foster organizations where employees are fully engaged
  • Discuss the benefits to having an engaged work place
  • Uncover fundamental skills necessary for leaders, at all levels, to build a committed and loyal work force.

Wiki Who? What Web 2.0 Can Do for You
Speaker:
Lori Reed

Topic

How do you bring over 500 employees with a wide range of computer skills up to date on the best of Web 2.0—blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, and all the 2.0 tools? More importantly, how do you accomplish this effectively in only two months with a limited budget and only a handful of trainers?

Learn how the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County created and implemented the award winning Learning 2.0/23 Things program that has been replicated by libraries, schools, universities, and businesses world-wide. This unique program focuses on collaboration and group interaction to teach Web 2.0 using Web 2.0. Best of all it's free and creative commons licensed so you can replicate the program for your organization.

Experiential Learning in the Elearning World
Speaker:
Breon Klopp

Topic

Organizational learning is trending toward online e-learning and educational design systems are responding by developing learning programs to be more realistic and interactive to capture the attention of learners. What are the hidden costs of simulated learning and why are organizations trying to replace yet replicate the first form of learning...from other people? This presentation / discussion / demonstration makes the case for experiential learning and the tremendous amount of informal and social learning that occurs, often unplanned and unaccounted for in the planning and implementation of learning programs.

Performance Instruction & Training provides an innovative motorsports themed program that is unique in creating fanatical enthusiasm using highly interactive learning experiences to foster long-term commitment, an environment of teamwork, and effective results.

“Think Inside the Box,” the most commonly requested program theme, utilizes a variety of formats for inclusion in keynote speeches, hands-on team building events, and multi-day experiential learning workshops customized to reinforce corporate initiatives and messaging. Calling on his background in collegiate athletics and speaking from the motorsports perspective, Breon and the “Think Inside the Box” program advocate that businesses would realize bottom-line results with less waste and more productivity by planning, preparing, and executing with the precision and quality of a pit crew.

Making Training Stick
Speaker:
Tim Connor

Topic

Every day thousands of organizations waste money on employee development because it isn’t effectively integrated, inspected or reinforced. Every day millions of employees sit through training programs that they know are just the flavor of the month and they don’t take ownership of the material covered or apply it for the long term. Every year thousands of training executives and managers deliver training programs that just don’t get the job done for a variety of reasons.

During this session Tim will focus on one vital area—Why don’t people use what they learn? There are two key factors that must be understood if you want your training to ‘stick’. The physiological and the psychological reasons that contribute to why people either don’t or can’t learn or why the learning only lasts a few weeks.

Learning Objectives:

  • To cover the key reasons that cause people to bring closed mindsets to learning experiences.
  • To show how you can overcome these mindsets
  • To get senior management to embrace and support the initiatives necessary to get long-term results.

The Speaker

Giving and Receiving Feedback
Speaker:
Sanford Danzinger, Thomas White

Topic

Learn the crucial skills of giving and receiving feedback, and start using them immediately. These skills lie at the root of professional—and personal—success. This method and training is unique and powerful; it does not teach the “rules” or "language" for feedback, but rather how to attain the right attitude when giving and receiving it. Participants also identify and handle common barriers to feedback. Then they develop a specific plan for using these skills at work and at home. The program is fast-paced, entertaining and filled with experiential exercises. Dr. Sanford Danziger and Mr. Thomas White have taught the program dozens of times throughout the USA.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Be more willing, able and comfortable when giving and receiving feedback.
  • Identify any personal barriers to receiving or giving feedback, and learn powerful methods to overcome them.
  • Identify three areas of life in which they will improve their ability to give feedback and receive it.
Presentation Mode

Interactive lecturette followed by real-situation practice (in dyads) of giving and receiving feedback. Participants then develop an action plan for those areas of life, or circumstances in which they will apply the method.

The Speakers

Incorporating Virtual Worlds into your Training
Speaker:
Heather Fausnaugh

Topic

In today’s age, many learning groups struggle to keep up with the ever-changing needs of their clients when it comes to performance improvement. It is necessary to ensure that learning advocates seek out new and innovative ways of reaching out to their learners. This may require stepping out of a comfort zone and moving away from static learning interventions to offer a continuous opportunity. Many learning groups focus solely on formal learning interventions and leave behind the very approach that fosters collaboration and knowledge increase.

This session is about one company’s journey to evolve as a learning group and focus on formal and informal modes of learning to close the gap on performance issues and engage employees. The presentation will take you through the vision of implementing a 3-D immersive virtual world. We will discuss research findings of 3-D Worlds, the pilot our company is currently undergoing, and finally the achievements to date. Part of the presentation will be delivered from within the 3-D virtual world.

The Speaker

Heather
Fausnaugh

Heather Fausnaugh has dedicated more than nine years to the field of learning and development. She began her career in learning at Delta Air Lines as an Instructional Designer creating instructor-led, self-paced, and video-instructed learning. She also was instrumental in creating one of Delta’s first multi-media simulations to train customer service agents on how to operate loading bridges. Heather went on to manage the facilitation staff for Delta Air Lines Reservations Call Center.

In 2004, Heather began a career with LogicBay as an Advanced Distributed Learning Project Manager. In this role she consulted with companies such as 3M, Caterpillar, Ecolab, and Hewlett-Packard to development and implement web-based and instructor-led training curriculums, performance support systems, competency modeling, e-commerce sites, performance centers, LMS upgrades and migrations, and LMS hosting.

To further expand her skills in learning arena, Heather transitioned to a performance improvement consultant at Bank of America, where she earned her Six Sigma Green Belt on a project to create an Enterprise Credit Curriculum. This project is yielding a 45-course curriculum that is estimated to save the bank $1.5M.

Currently, Heather is the Learning Director at TIAA-CREF. Because of her passion for performance consulting and ensuring training is tied to the business goals, she has re-vamped work flow processes for the learning department that can be used as a toolkit that includes proactive performance consulting methods.

The Chapter has two Special Interest Groups—the eLearning SIG and a newly-formed Job Seekers SIG.

Job Seekers SIG

Contact: Lara McKinnon (704-364-3574) LaraMcK@bellsouth.net

In the best market ASTD is a wonderful place to meet new people as well as be renewed by presentations about topics that matter to us. So what happens when our economic forecasts seem to be getting bleaker, the networking opportunities seem smaller and more of us are unemployed? While the first statement is still true, there are some new items that become part of the conversation.

  • How can we best interact with employed ASTD members without them feeling bombarded with requests?
  • How do we support each other when we may be applying for the same job?
  • What are some of the rules regarding unemployment benefits?
  • How do we go about accessing our current skills and figuring out what type of jobs suit us best?
  • Can some of our needs be better addressed by our ASTD chapter?

If you are interested in exploring any of these questions, participating in some informal Learning Labs, or just offering your wisdom, please join us at 5:00 at the next ASTD monthly meeting. For more information contact Lara McKinnon at 704-364-3574 or LaraMcK@bellsouth.net
