President's Message—May 2008

The ASTD Network

My favorite benefit of my membership in the local ASTD chapter is the ability to network with my fellow members. I think it’s why most of us continue to be members.

I often hear folks in our field joke about how small the workplace performance and improvement community is here in the Charlotte area. Everyone seems to know everyone else. Yet, even with such an intertwined community, we are still very much strangers. I commonly receive messages from our members who are looking for help connecting with other members. One person was looking for another member in the same industry. Another was trying to find resources to help her with a specific problem. Sadly, with nearly 250 members, I don’t know everyone. I wish I did, and that I could just be like the Cheshire Cat, sitting in a tree, pointing everyone in the right direction.

It is my hope that your membership will help you find the people and resources you are looking for. This month we have a slightly different format for our chapter meeting—instead of a single speaker presenting a single topic or idea, the spotlight is on you, the member. The format will allow you to share your gifts and talents with your fellow members, and to even tap into other for help with a problem or project you may be facing. The goal is that everyone will return to their jobs with new ideas that you can’t get from a book, or even a speaker, only from your peers.

The Careers and Education Committee will continue with roundtable discussions prior to upcoming monthly meetings to help meet the needs of job seekers, career explorers, and ongoing support resources.

We also want to hear from you. What kinds of resources do you need? What can the chapter do to help you find other members with similar interests or needs? As always, feel free to contact any board member with suggestions, or email me at President@astdcharlotte.org.

CHIP Program

You make a difference…

Whether you’re a member or not, ASTD National donates fund to our chapter if you do business with them using our Chapter Source Code, which is CH4067. This works whether you:

• call 800-NAT-ASTD
• access www.astd.org
• use an ASTD order form

...just write in our Chapter Source Code.

The following are some examples of the revenue that can be generated for our chapter:

• For each new ASTD National member: $20
• For each renewing ASTD National member: $10
• For each ASTD National Conference (ICE, TechKnowledge) registration: 10% (not to exceed $80).
• For each ASTD-published book sold: 5%. (Books not published by ASTD are not included in the CHIP program).
• For HPI and ROI courses: the chapter will receive a percentage of the registration fee, and the registrant will receive a discount.
• For CPT (Certified Performance Technologist) programs, chapters will earn $50 when someone participates with their chapter source code.
