The ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference (ALC) is an annual event that brings together chapter leaders from across the U.S. to network, share best practices and ideas for running the chapter. Charlotte was fortunate to have strong representation with eight members attending this year. The conference included representatives from 330 chapters from across the country. Current and incoming board members in attendance were Owen Davis, Bruce Oberle, Keith Devoe, Keith Vincent, Pamela Myers, Terry Langley, Traci Cuthbertson and Amy Horne.
The Charlotte Chapter was recognized at the conference for being chapter of the month in July 2009 as well as for Sharing our Success (SOS) and 100% CORE (ASTD Chapter Operating Requirements) We are a strong chapter and are proud of these achievements!
The conference included several workshops and general sessions with improving chapter performance and service to its members as a key theme. The sessions addressed all aspects of chapter management including leadership, finance, administration, membership, branding. One noteworthy session was Promoting the Value of Membership which focused on communicating the value of membership to existing and prospective members. The discussion centered on recognizing what membership is worth versus to what membership is.
Here is what some of our participants had to say about this important meeting:
“It was great to have the opportunity to participate this year at ALC alongside some of our 2010 board members and get to know each of them on a more personal level. This is the first time I’ve been able to attend and I learned a great deal from the other chapters around the country. I was encouraged by the fact that we are one of the chapters that others look to as an example. However, I also gained a great deal of insight from chapter leaders who are doing incredible things through workshops and monthly meetings that hopefully we will be able to use as we seek to make our chapter even better over the coming years!” – Amy Horne
“There were many opportunities to talk with peers from other chapters regarding their challenges and successes. Everyone from Charlotte found great value in attending.” –Bruce Oberle
“Attending this conference is definitely one of the best perks of being on the board. Interacting with other ASTD chapters and seeing the enthusiasm and creativity generated is very motivating. And having an opportunity to hear nationally recognized speakers like Bob Pike and Thiagi in sessions of less than 30 people was terrific.” - Pamela Myers
