From the President...
President's Message - November 2009
by Kary Beaman
PILATES IN THE DARK
At 6 am the lights went off in the gym, but I heard voices. Just moments before a man and woman had been sparring, street fighting. Now it was dark. What were they doing in there? Later, I discovered it was Pilates – in the dark. Pilates in the dark, stretching in the dark, dark like sleeping, like I could have my eyes closed and kind of sleep while exercising. Pilates in the dark sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Pilates in the dark is a lot like being a board member of a local non-profit. It’s a lot like having the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. See if these conversations sound familiar.

| Get up before 6am and show up. Nooo! |
Ugh. No more responsibility! |
Honor, respect and stretch yourself. |
| It’s dark. You can keep your eyes closed. |
It’s a team of close to 20. They all share the load. |
You can probably find 1-4 hours per month if not per week. |
| No one can actually see what you’re doing. It’s dark. |
There are plenty of experienced board members to offer ideas. |
This is a way to grow in a new direction with a support team. |
| I feel so good after I work out, tired but strong. |
It feels great to get meeting reviews back with positive ratings, and know I helped make it happen. |
It feels great to own the chapter success when you’ve helped build it. |
| Now, you can tell people you’re working out and find out what they’re doing or not doing. It gives you something to talk about. |
Serving on a board of any type is a great conversation starter and springboard to what works or doesn’t. It gives you experience in a team. |
You can lead as much or as little as the role you choose, and grow your network doing it. The organization has thrived because members just like you stepped up. |
Wouldn't it be wonderful to lay in the dark, mind wandering and get the body you want, resume you want, and experience you want? Now is a good time to step up. There are still openings on the board and opportunities throughout the year to serve. Being a board member is a lot like being a parent - if you think you might like it, the ride is well worth the effort. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the Charlotte Chapter as President in 2009.
