July 2009 Chapter of the Month - Charlotte Chapter

This 200 member chapter is being recognized for “The Day of Learning,” a one-day conference with multiple tracks which is the main event of Charlotte ASTD's Employee Learning Week activities.

President-elect Owen Davis says the purpose of the initiative is to provide advanced learning practitioners with a local, high quality professional development opportunity. The 2008 conference was co-sponsored by Charlotte ASTD and Bank of America.

Providing opportunities on multiple fronts seems to be a hallmark of the Charlotte Chapter. Davis says the chapter’s commitment to its members and the community is paramount. Evidence of this is found in the support the Charlotte ASTD is currently offering to displaced workers and contractors in the form of a Special Interest Group focused on the issues these members are facing because of the tough economy. Additionally the Charlotte Chapter is exploring a grant to a local university for a scholarship in the chapter’s name. As a forward-thinking chapter, Charlotte ASTD is planning to focus on a few key objectives to which executive members, board members, and the membership community can align themselves. By the end of 2009 the chapter will have launched a new web presence and will be building a framework for integrating social networking. Plans to engage senior learning leaders in a forum just for them (away from job hunters and vendors) are also in the works. Charlotte  ASTD is also facilitating an internship program with UNC Charlotte and local businesses. Congratulations to the Charlotte ASTD on their selection as July Chapter of the Month!
